2009 is set to be a momentous year for Belfast with ₤500 million worth of developments unveiled, including a number of landmark buildings opening their doors to the public again following extensive refurbishments. Next Friday (6 March) the Ulster Hall will open again, marking the start of a ‘renaissance’ for Belfast, as well as a number of new developments across the city. With Belfast City Hall due to re-open in August, the comprehensive list includes Queen’s University’s new Sir Anthony O’Reilly Library, St Malachy’s Church, Ulster Museum and Saint Anne’s Square as well as a number of new commercial, hotel and residential developments planned for the city. Other highlights include the Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge in August when Belfast’s quayside will be transformed with a large number of Tall Ships having travelled across the Atlantic from Halifax in Canada. Belfast will be thriving with an influx of tourists and a packed calendar of events for residents to enjoy too. Speaking at the City Hall today where he revealed the extent of the investment, the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Tom Hartley, said: “2009 will be Belfast’s year – it will be a year like no other in the city’s history. For against a backdrop of economic downturn and job loss, this is the time for our city to claim solutions and turn its back on despair. “This is the year when we will showcase £500m worth of investment in Belfast. This investment has gone into maintaining and promoting the rich cultural heritage of our city through the refurbishing of its great iconic buildings like the Ulster Hall, City Hall and the Ulster Museum. “It will go towards building on the solid foundations for the future of Belfast in the striking new developments of Saint Anne’s Square, Queen’s University’s Sir Anthony O’Reilly Library, the University of Ulster’s new Belfast Campus and the Obel Tower. “Throughout the course of the year and year ahead, we will see how Belfast has developed into a confident and contemporary city. It is a great city to live, work, visit and invest in. It is a vibrant city full of opportunity, inspiring enterprise, creativity and change. Now is the time and Belfast is the place where anything is possible. “Today’s event will also highlight our drive to engage in more joined-up thinking and real partnership working, that is, the public and private sectors working with a common purpose and goal to create a better Belfast. The way forward for the management of our city is through a shared responsibility of issues and a shared delivery of solutions. “We must not stand back and let the moment pass. This is our golden opportunity to proclaim that this is Belfast’s time, its moment and we want to share it with everyone!” The historic Ulster Hall will be the first of the iconic buildings to open in the city in 2009 after a major two-year refurbishment programme. The £8.5 million scheme includes refitting and redecorating the main auditorium, the restoration of the original metal balcony balustrade and chandelier, new roof and floors and a moveable stage extension. Belfast City Hall is due to re-open in August after being temporarily closed since October 2007. Major renovations to the building will include replacing heating, mechanical and electrical systems, asbestos removal, drainage improvements, re-roofing and installing computer network systems. St Malachy’s Church in Alfred Street will re-open at the end of March after being restored to its former glory thanks to a £3.5 million investment. The Ulster Museum will also re-open to the public later this year. Other major investments for the city are The Boat development at Custom House Square in July, Saint Anne’s Square in September and the opening of M1/Westlink in March. In 2010, the Belfast Sewers Project which will improve water quality in both the River Lagan and Blackwater River is due to be completed as is work on the Obel Tower – Northern Ireland’s tallest building. The new Lyric Theatre is due to open in 2010 and work will continue on the Titanic Signature Project which aims to establish the Titanic Quarter as a major leisure and tourism destination celebrating Belfast’s rich maritime heritage.

Christmas is mere days away and that means just one thing for Northern Ireland’s legion of electronic music fans – Planetlove’s annual WKD Winter Party is imminent!Planetlove are embarking on another sensational Christmas party in the King’s Hall, Belfast, as they round off their 10th anniversary year in style with their ‘Dance Against The Machine’ spectacular.
It has been another groundbreaking year for the team at Planetlove who kicked off the year with their new Love Fridays residency in the Beach Club, Odyssey Pavilion, Belfast, and their hugely popular Winter Session in Leopardstown.
In June their parent company, PLM Promotions, brought the fabulous ‘Live in Portrush’ beach party to the sunny shores of the North-West with Grammy award winners The Chemical Brothers and a host of chart-topping international acts and DJs including Fedde le Grand, Eric Prydz, Utah Saints and Steve Angello.
And that was followed by Planetlove’s milestone 10th anniversary festival, which was held over two days incorporating Tiesto’s massive ‘In Search of Sunrise Tour’ and the PLANETLOVE WKD festival, complete with camping and world renowned names like Pendulum and Ferry Corsten!
Magical events continued throughout the year and now Ireland’s leading electronic music brand bow out of 2008 with the party to end all parties;
Three hours of the world’s Number 1 DJ (DJ Mag Top 100) Armin van Buuren, alongside global superstars Lisa Lashes, Alex Kidd, John O’Callaghan and the voice behind some of the biggest dance hits in history (‘Beautiful’ and ‘Liberation’), Marcella Woods. Support comes from Planetlove resident DJ Mog.
And this year these iconic vinyl and CD spinners are joined by a robotic film star, ‘T8’, who is the brainchild of Bruce ‘Robocop’ Hansing and has taken the world by storm.
‘T8’ has appeared in an upcoming hip-hop music video, performed on television for the BBC and ITV, starred in the world’s most elite clubs including the Limelight (New York), Number 1 (France) and Le Pacha (Switzerland) and dazzled HRH Princess Anne and her family at The Royal Variety Show with a watching television audience of 18 million people!
The excitement surrounding this year’s WKD Winter Party is immense and pre-event ticket sales have hit an all-time high.
“We’re really looking forward to this one. It’s the perfect end to our 10th birthday year which has just been sensational from start to finish. It’s great to have Armin back with us again too,” explains Eddie Wray, Promoter.
And Judith Robinson of WKD, sponsors of Planetlove, says:
“Planetlove never stops impressing. This has been a great year for them – definitely an appropriate celebration of their 10th anniversary – so this is the ideal way to end it. We’re really proud to be associated with Planetlove.”
Planetlove’s WKD Winter Party – ‘Dance Against The Machine’ is almost upon us!

TICKETS
Standard and VIP tickets are available from www.planetlovemusic.com, Ticketmaster and independent outlets nationwide priced at (standard) £32.50 (+bf) and (VIP) £52.50 (+bf). For more ticket information see below artist blurbs.

With tours of South America, the Far East and Australia already under his belt, O’Callaghan sits proudly as one of the most in-demand DJs and producers in the world today.

Marcella Woods:
Her collaboration with Matt Darey on the massive trance anthems ‘Beautiful,’ ‘Liberation’ and ‘Fly Like an Angel’ propelled both artists to world stardom and sold millions of records across the globe!
Now working alongside her brother (Michael Woods aka Warrior) under the guise Out of Office, Woods is introducing her amazing vocal talent to the world of electro.
Out of Office’s first release, ‘Hands Up,’ won huge support from the likes of Roger Sanchez and Pete Tong and went on to be a massive hit on both Radio 1 and MTV, thus reinforcing Woods’ status as one of the leading electronic vocalists and Live PA’s in the world!

LITTLE did British film director Bill Clark know that when his wife encouraged him to read a children’s book it would become a project that would take over his life for more than a decade. The project eventually resulted in an award-winning movie that will touch the hearts of all who see it.The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey is released on DVD on November 24 and stars Oscar nominated and Golden Globe winner Tom Berenger and the Golden Globe nominated Joely Richardson.

The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey is a film for our credit crunched, cynical times. No sex or violence, no loud rap music or cool dance moves, this movie is about hearts and what moves them.

Based on the best selling book of the same name written by Susan Wojciechowski, Bill Clark bought the rights to the book and then set about making the story into a movie.

He succeeded against the odds, raising a budget of $10 million (US) and enlisting an award-winning cast to create The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey.

Jonathan Toomey (Berenger) known as “Gloomy Toomey” to the local children, is a fantastic wood carver with a secret past. Some years before his wife and newborn son had died – so he locked his heart away and moved to a lonely log cabin deep in a forest.

Thomas McDowell, played by Luke Ward-Wilkinson of Wild at Heart and Beautiful People fame, is a young boy living a happy family life of baseball cards and cookies in the city with his devoted parents.

All this is destroyed when his father is killed in a far off war. His mother, Susan (Joely Richardson) is forced to sell their home and move to the country to live with her sister, leaving behind Thomas’s beloved Grandfather and the housekeeper and everything he holds dear.

Just when Thomas thought that his life couldn’t get any worse, he realises that on the journey to the country he has lost the family’s wooden carved nativity set. This is his last link with his father and his past life.

Angry at the broken promises of grown ups, Thomas retreats within himself. Nothing is ever going to be the same. His mother, Susan, decides to try and bring him out of his shell and a chance encounter with the woodman Toomey leads her to put aside her own struggles with grief and ask the carver to create a new nativity set for the boy.

She even convinces the reclusive Toomey to allow Thomas to watch him as he works.

With each carving the relationship between the man and the boy grows stronger – each dealing with their own grief in their own way. They learn to laugh and move into the future with hope. The scenery and musical score add to the sentiment and humour of this lovely Christmas movie.

Yes, this film does deal with dark themes but more importantly it deals with life and new beginnings.

Watch it with your kids, it’s a movie that should be shown every Christmas along with all the other classics.

A thought provoking, gentle film for those of us who long for a time when Christmas was more about people than presents.

Merry Christmas!

The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey (U) is released on DVD on November 24 at around £9.99 available from HMV and all good DVD outlets.

BELFAST City Council is set to ratify its £10m contribution to the Titanic Signature Project at a special council meeting on December 16.Diane Dodds, Chairperson of the Strategic Policy and Resources Committee, welcomed the announcement that the Northern Ireland Executive is to offer £43.5m towards the £97m Titanic Quarter proposal.Dodds said: “Belfast City Council has already agreed in principle to contribute £10m to the project.
The council has to wait until the Executive made its decision and now that is in place we can proceed with our planned meeting in December.
“The timing will allow work on the project to begin in January as outlined by the Executive”.
The cash injection is set to create 850 jobs and will bring in almost half a million visitors to Northern Ireland.
Councillor Dodds said: “Without wishing to pre-empt our discussion, I think that the council’s response will be positive given that this project will create 600 construction workers jobs and 250 permanent jobs.
“There is clear evidence that this will prove to be is a significant investment that will result in consolidating and growing the Belfast tourism product, which we all know has been a major success story in recent years.
“Bringing the Titanic story back home to its birthplace in time for its centenary is timely and is expected to attract up to 400,000 visitors to our city who will spend up to £30m each year.
“As well as Belfast City Council’s £10m contribution towards the remaining £53.5 million, it is expected the rest will come from Titanic Quarter Limited and Belfast Harbour Commissioners.”

Lynn McCreery, Outreach and Development officer, said she hopes getting the community involved in the east Belfast park will create a sense of pride and encourage more people to use the facilities available.
“Children and adults are being asked to get their hands dirty while learning about the environment in their local park and the native species which grow there”, she said.
“There will also be games, a nature walk, an orienteering trail or for the less energetic arts and crafts sessions.
“It is a chance for young people to learn about their environment and the important part parks play in health, leisure and simple enjoyment.”
Children must be accompanied by an adult when participating in the activities and everyone is asked to wear sensible clothing and footwear.

THE Rape Crisis & Sexual Abuse Centre today reveals an internal memo that shows a government minister who approved a recommendation in 2006 to withdraw the organisation’s funding was deliberately given information that was factually incorrect by civil servants. The document refers to cash withdrawals and claims that they “were not recorded in the organisation’s financial records”.
Co Director of the organisation Eileen Calder blasted this claim saying that it was “totally untrue”.
She added: “This is a deliberate and provable lie, since this document was uncovered we have sought legal advice and are considering a formal complaint against the civil servants responsible.
“The allegation was never made to our centre because they know it is provably untrue. From our own records it is very clear what this money was used for and during each subsequent review and verification the information was made available.
“The continual referral by the Department to this has damaged our organisation and cast aspertions on the staff volunteers and organisation”.
In light of this new information the Rape Crisis & Sexual Abuse Centre is appealing to Northern Ireland politicians and public representatives to consider the evidence and ensure that adequate public funding is provided for the valuable service.
Eileen added: “Following the documentary this week we are overwhelmed by the generosity of the public, however, the fact remains it is government’s responsibility to ensure the Centre is funded and we can continue to provide these very valuable services which were portrayed excellently in the recent BBC documentary made by award winning film-maker Alison Millar of Tern TV.”
This is just one of a number of issues that the RC&SAC press conference will deal with today.
In another document attached/enclosed you will find an outline of other issues arising from this internal memo and other documents obtained under the Freedom Of Information Act.

THE Rape Crisis & Sexual Abuse Centre has been inundated with messages of support from all over Northern Ireland and further afield following the screening of a hard-hitting documentary by the BBC on Wednesday night. Centre staff have taken a record number of calls this morning from members of the public congratulating them on their work as well as offering practical and financial support.

Eileen Kelly, Centre Manager and Co-Director of the organisation said the response from the film made by award-winning director Alison Millar of Tern TV was encouraging.
She added: “We have been taking calls non-stop since the documentary was screened last night from clients past and present, concerned members of the public, other voluntary organisations and professionals we work with who didn’t realise the extent of the financial crisis offering everything from a simple message of encouragement to donations.
“More than one person have even came to the Centre with their donation and we would like to thank everyone for their kindness.

“The messages of support and donations have lifted the spirits of the organisation and we believe this is just the beginning of our fight to survive.

“Now we would call on all our politicians and public representatives to take heed of what their constituents want and to help us support victims and survivors of rape and sexual abuse”.

The documentary screened on BBC last night highlighted the financial plight of the organisation as well as that of its staff members who have been working without pay for approximately nine months.

It also told the stories of four survivors who all expressed the fact that they felt without the Centre they would be “just another suicide statistic”.

Pop duo Sean and Sarah Smith were joined by cartoon favourite Scooby Doo, Hollyoaks actor Gerard McCarthy and Olympic medallists cyclist Wendy Houvenaghel and boxer Paddy Barnes for the Christmas lights switch-on.
Thousands braved the weather to watch performances by Same Difference and soap star Gerard McCarthy, who hails from Belfast, and see Lord Mayor Tom Hartley flipped the switch to light up the streets.
The hugely popular Christmas Continental Market has also officially opened at Belfast City Hall and will run until Saturday December 20.
Once again the grounds of Belfast City Hall will come alive with dozens of market stalls offering a stunning range of crafts, food and decorations from across Europe and beyond.

There’s also a new Christmas carousel, face painter and the opportunity to send a letter to Santa at his post box.
